Notes This tin trunk belonged to a Northern Italian single farmer, Michael Scarabellotti aged 29, and was the trunk used for his personal belongings on the ill-fated Marquis de Rays voyage from Italy. The trunk was donated to the museum by his son Frank Scarabellotti. Michael was a single man when he left Italy and met his wife Zelinda Mellare on the ship. They formed a very close attachment through all the hardship of the De Ray’s voyage. They married in Sydney at St Mary’s Cathedral and determined to make the most of their life and opportunity in a new land. After living at New Italy for long enough to give birth to four children at Coraki Hospital, three of whom were educated at New Italy School, Michael and Zelinda and family moved to Bungawalbyn where their other children were born, including Frank. The children enrolled at New Italy School were Lucia, Tony and Joseph. In the First World War, Michael Scarabellotti demonstrated his integration into the Australian community and allegiance to his new homeland when he joined the First Australian Imperial Forces (AIF). He was later decorated for meritorious conduct. Later, three of Michael and Zelinda’s sons enlisted and served as soldiers for Australia during the Second World War
